Job Summary:
The Infrastructure & Cybersecurity Engineer ensures the stability, security, and high performance of Lake Michigan Colleges enterprise IT environment. This role manages VMware clusters, Veeam backups, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, File and Application servers, and SQL Server systems while leading key cybersecurity efforts, including vulnerability assessments, security controls, and incident response. The position requires strong expertise in PowerShell automation, SIEM monitoring, and enterprise file management, alongside proactive system monitoring, capacity planning, vendor coordination, and cross-functional project leadership. Clear communication and analytical skills are essential for translating technical challenges into effective business solutions and ensuring compliance with data privacy standards. By maintaining 99.9% system availability and robust disaster recovery capabilities, the Systems Engineer supports the colleges mission and keeps critical academic and administrative operations running reliably. This is NOT a fully remote position.
Essential Functions:
Infrastructure Strategy & Planning
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable enterprise system operations and business continuity.
Lead capacity planning for VMware, storage systems, and Microsoft 365.
Develop long-term strategic roadmaps for virtualization, backups, and cloud integration.
Define system requirements and performance benchmarks to support growth and modernization.
System Acquisition & Deployment
Conduct cost-benefit analyses for VMware, Veeam, Microsoft 365, and SQL Server solutions.
Research and evaluate enterprise technologies to guide purchasing decisions.
Deploy and configure VMware clusters, Veeam infrastructure, and Microsoft 365 tenant services.
Core System Operations & Management
Design and document system architectures, including diagrams and integration specs.
Integrate enterprise systems such as SQL Server, Microsoft 365/Exchange, file servers, and Veeam.
Maintain detailed technical documentation and training materials.
Ensure compatibility across Windows Server, Linux, VMware, and Microsoft 365 environments.
Monitor and optimize system performance using PowerShell, SIEM, and monitoring tools.
Deliver performance analytics and capacity reports for SLA and planning needs.
Manage Active Directory, including user provisioning and GPO administration.
Containerization, CI/CD, and Orchestration
Security & Compliance Leadership
Ensure data privacy compliance and maintain system-wide security controls.
Participate in cybersecurity incident response activities and coordinate with cross-functional teams
Develop and maintain incident response playbooks and procedures
Perform security risk assessments for technology initiatives
Design and review security architecture for new systems and infrastructure changes
Conduct internal security audits and coordinate external assessments using automated and manual testing methods.
Secure Linux and Windows environments
Monitor threat intelligence feeds and assess organizational impact
Manage security patch deployment and vulnerability remediation timelines
Configure DLP policies in Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams
Manage the automated data discovery and classification tools
Investigate DLP policy violations and data breach incidents
Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity
Administer Veeam Backup, including job configuration, retention, and DR testing.
Manage enterprise file sharing systems with appropriate security and backup integration.
Perform system configuration backups and restoration testing for outages and incidents.
Plan and execute upgrades, patches, and maintenance cycles.
Troubleshoot complex issues across virtualization, backups, and enterprise applications.
Automation & Process Improvement
Develop PowerShell automation scripts for administration, reporting, and monitoring.
Optimize virtual deployments through resource tuning and standardization.
Support SLA compliance through proactive monitoring and rapid resolution.

Accountabilities:
Job Specifications:
Two-year degree or college diploma in computer science or related field, or three years of equivalent experience supporting enterprise-level server virtualization, Microsoft 365, backup systems, and infrastructure security required.
Comprehensive understanding of hypervisor technology is required; preferably VMware
Solid grasp of backup methodologies, retention policies, and disaster recovery orchestration using enterprise tools like Veeam is required.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft 365 tenant Administration and Microsoft 365 Security administration is required.
Foundational knowledge of SIEM log correlation, vulnerability management, and the application of security patches across Windows and Linux environments.
Proficiency in scripting logic, specifically using PowerShell, to automate routine administrative tasks and generate system reports.
Understanding of data privacy practices and applicable laws.
Preferred Professional Certifications or Relevant Experience:
Virtualization/Backup: VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE)
Security: CompTIA Security+
Cloud/Administration: Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate, Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate
Knowledge of networking infrastructures (LAN, WAN, VPN, etc.)
Grade: Salary Range: $67,621 - $81,196
