The Assistant Director of Sustainable Food Systems with direction and guidance from the Director of the Stanford Food Institute (SFI), and Associate Director of Hospitality Strategy and Major Events, lead multiple program efforts, including student and staff education, food waste diversion, kitchen electrification, food-related greenhouse gas emissions reduction and resilience/adaptation strategies throughout the supply chain, and other programs in support of the vision for the overall enterprise-wide initiatives. Specialize in sustainable food systems, data analysis, multistakeholder engagement, collaborative program coordination and management, communication with diverse stakeholders, and change management within foodservice operations.
This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.
JOB PURPOSE:
Lead specific sustainability programs'/services' development and manage all aspects of program execution in keeping with the vision for the overall initiative. Specialize in a key sustainability work area of analytical or outreach program management.
CORE DUTIES:
Perform program management activities independently including: designing, communicating, compiling, and reporting program performance indicators, trends and metrics to various organizations and stakeholders.
Manage program budget; 3rd party vendors and contractors.
Represent Stanford in industry and community events.
May manage junior staff or student interns.
Analytical program management roles include: providing oversight to the data collection and reporting process for surveys, reports, and publications; managing the analysis of campus sustainability performance and cases for various third party evaluations and surveys; managing various data-driven assessment projects for campus buildings, maintaining communication and outreach related to these programs; and designing, communicating, compiling, and reporting key sustainability performance indicators, trends and metrics to various organizations and stakeholders. This may include but is not limited to preventing, measuring, and reducing food waste, as well as reducing food-related greenhouse gas emissions.
*Create, develop, and manage budget for assigned area(s). Support development and fundraising needs of SFI, for opportunities related to sustainable food systems. Develop and manage frameworks for impact measurement and program evaluation across the Institute's programs.
Outreach program management roles include: providing oversight to the designing, planning, and delivering campus education and training components of sustainability programs and services, raising campus awareness of sustainability goals and practices; managing schools' and departments' coordination for increasing the adoption of sustainability programs and services; managing sustainability publications, collateral, website, events, and online presentations; sourcing and coordinating external sustainability publicity, and promotional opportunities; and submitting proposals for national and regional conferences. Contribute relevant SDHA data and engage stakeholders in support of key SFI partnerships and strategic targets, both on campus and beyond, such as: Scope 3 Emissions Program, Climate Action Plan, REGEN1, Drawdown Labs, Zero Waste Committee, Black Farmers Purchasing Program, and the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative, as well as any future sustainability-related partnerships. Liaise between SFI-based living lab research and research occurring in the Menus of Change University Research Collaborative, contributing Stanford faculty and dining expertise to relevant MCURC research projects as well as implementing and translating insights generated from MCURC research, education, and culinary projects into SDHA operational improvements.Provide programmatic support to the MCURC Racial Equity Working Group, in support of R&DE's overarching diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) values and programs
*Direct and develop programs for sustainable food operations, communications, and community relations. Support programmatic needs across food research, education, and flavor and innovation. May include supporting SFI Internship, SFI-hosted events, the annual SFI Research Symposium, on-campus educational courses and student projects, and collaborative research projects with faculty and staff using dining halls as living laboratories.
Support SFI Director, R&DE Strategic Communications, and SFI Comms Lead on collateral, presentation content, editorial, website, and other communication needs related to SFI--as relates to sustainable food systems. Create and make presentations to showcase results, savings, and progress. Serve as subject matter expert on sustainable food program and climate-smart dining issues, and support media and public relations concerns; collaboratively coordinate the media relations efforts with leadership.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Familiarity with higher education organizational and operational structures with the, ability to objectively think through initiatives' impact in an institutional setting.
Knowledge and clear understanding of green building practices, sustainability opportunities and the technical expertise for addressing such concerns.
Ability to manage a complex and often competing set of priorities in a high-pressure, results-oriented environment.
Strong communications skills, both written and oral (including proofreading) and ability to use sound judgment in following policies and procedures, using creativity to solve problems.
Demonstrated skill in the use of spreadsheets, database programs, and word processing programs and basic-intermediate skills in creative programs suits (Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator and/or Photoshop).
