Position Summary
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for development, guidance, and implementation of environmental, occupational health, and fire/life safety programs aimed at protecting the campus community and to achieve and maintain compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes that govern these programs. This department reports to the Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs
The Assistant Environmental Health Specialist will ensure code compliance in all aspects of the broad-based environmental health programs such as food protection, potable water quality, and recreational water safety. This will be primarily at the SDSU Mission Valley Snapdragon Stadium and the emerging Innovation District and residential property to be developed at Mission Valley. Because the student number has increased over the past five years, and the number of events and locations requiring inspection and follow up have proliferated, there is also existing programmatic work on the main SDSU Campus in the same specialty fields.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Entry to this classification requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Valid California Driver's License or have the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Specialized Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience enforcing or implementing environmental or public health laws, regulations for a public or private entity.
Knowledge and experience in food establishment and public pool plan review process.
One or more of the following degrees/certifications is preferred:
Bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, biology, chemistry or related discipline, coupled with two years of directly related environmental health experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
Environmental Health Specialist Trainee: current evaluation letter from the State of California, Department of Public Health (CDPH) which states that the applicant is eligible to begin training in an approved environmental health training program leading to an REHS.
Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS): Current Certificate as an REHS from the State of California, Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,200 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,170 - $7,545 per month.
SDSU Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
