Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture seeks a Research Analyst to support scaling sustainable, regenerative commodity crop production.
Field to Market is a 501(c)(3) non-profit multi-stakeholder organization that brings together a diverse alliance of 150+ members including grower groups; agribusiness companies; food, beverage, restaurant, and retail companies; conservation organizations; and universities and public-sector partners to focus on defining and measuring the sustainability of commodity crop production. Field to Market has developed a Fieldprint Platform that currently includes eight metrics used to help guide sustainability efforts in U.S. commodity crop production.
This position will report to the Science and Research Manager but will get to work with and learn from the entire Field to Market team, which is a small, diverse, mission-driven group. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Identifying and processing data resources related to commodity crops and environmental indicators in Field to Market programs
- Agronomic research to help extend the program to represent additional crops and refine sustainability metrics, benchmarks and indicators
- Literature review and analysis on diverse science topics to inform stakeholder decision-making
- Analysis and synthesis of field-level results from the Fieldprint Platform and environmental models for program development and reporting against goals
- Maintenance and creation of data tools to support members
- Reporting of findings in appropriate scientific forums, including presentations, posters, and contributions to scientific reports and journal articles
- Representing Field to Market in scientific meetings, conferences, and events
If you want experience before pursuing a PhD, or want an overview of U.S. agriculture, this position has a lot to offer. In this position you will interact with folks with diverse viewpoints and approaches to sustainable agriculture, and you will work directly with university scientists to translate and incorporate their research in to sustainability metrics. In short, you will get to meet a lot of people and learn a lot about U.S. agriculture.

- Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred) in agronomy, soil science, geography, engineering, environmental science, or a related field.
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience (can include work or advanced-degree project) using agronomic/environmental data analysis/models.
- Experience using spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel) and programming (e.g., R) is required, knowledge of the R package Shiny is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills required to deal with mathematical models, statistics and the gathering of data to reach conclusions.
- Ability to clearly communicate data analyses to co-workers, managers and stakeholders.
- Applicants must be fluent in English, have strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Applicants must be able to prioritize, establish, and meet deadlines while handling multiple tasks.
- Ability to travel up to 15%.
The ability to work in-person at Field to Market’s office in Washington DC is preferred as it presents fantastic opportunities for networking and attending local events, but a remote position would be considered for the right candidate. If remote, travel to in-person meetings as needed would be expected.
