Summary of Position
The University of New Hampshire is seeking a food safety specialist to fill a full-time, benefits-eligible position as State Specialist/Extension Professor of Food Safety. This position is an 80% Extension appointment with UNH Extension and a 20% teaching appointment with the UNH College of Life Science and Agriculture in the Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems. This is a non-tenure-track position.
The successful applicant will develop research-based educational programming for farms and food manufacturers. They will be the primary Extension resource for technical expertise to help farms and food manufacturers comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety and Preventive Controls rules as well as other federal and local regulations.
The Extension State Specialist will collaborate with faculty, Extension specialists, and agricultural stakeholders to undertake engaged outreach as part of a team working to develop and implement innovative, relevant, and impactful programming in the field of food safety.
We expect strong synergies with faculty, researchers, and specialists working in diverse areas of agricultural and food systems including sustainable horticulture, animal science, agribusiness, and food studies. The Extension State Specialist will develop networks with relevant local, state, regional, and national agencies and organizations.
The successful candidate will contribute to the educational offerings of the College of Life Science and Agriculture teaching one course per year in agricultural food safety, or a related topic. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral scientists.

Develop and implement innovative, effective food safety outreach programs for New Hampshire’s agriculture and food processing industries.
Collaborate with colleagues throughout the region to develop, implement, and evaluate multi-state outreach programs.
Provide leadership and support to field specialists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-impact educational programs and publications for all sectors of New Hampshire’s food system.
Conduct applied research in food safety topics such as agricultural water, soil amendments, post-harvest handling, indoor growing systems, or product shelf life, as appropriate to support the state and region’s agricultural and food processing communities.
Publish and disseminate information to peers and client groups through appropriate presentations, publications, and electronic delivery systems.
Assess statewide, regional, and national food safety needs, challenges, and trends, and use this information as a basis for program development.
Compete successfully in national and regional funding initiatives.
Participate in professional development to enhance competence in food safety, program development, and other appropriate disciplines.
Build and maintain partnerships with university faculty, local, state, and federal agencies and organizations.
Serve on external boards and committees as appropriate to enhance partnerships.
Provide service to the organization and university by serving on committees and teams or as a mentor, as invited and appropriate.
Ensure programmatic involvement of under-served and under-represented audiences and ensure that all educational programming is conducted in full accordance with civil rights, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Affirmative Action (AA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) policies and procedures.
Teach one course per year and advise undergraduate students on behalf of the department, as mutually agreed upon and based on department and college needs.
Provide service to components of academic programs as requested.
Work closely with the college to identify and facilitate potential internship opportunities for undergraduate students.
Support and mentor COLSA undergraduate and graduate students in academics and applied research and contribute to graduate student committees as a committee member or chair as appropriate.
Contribute to the mission of the college’s Department of Agriculture, Nutrition, and Food Systems, by participating in faculty meetings, serving on committees, and participating in other department activities.
Other Minimum Qualifications
D. or terminal degree in food safety, food microbiology, food science or closely related field.
Demonstrated expertise in food microbiology and food safety.
Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying regulatory provisions.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Demonstrated experience in securing competitive extramural funding.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work well as part of a team.
Demonstrated competence in use of modern technologies and their application to Extension program development and delivery.
Willingness and ability to establish and work with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities, and other differences.
Ability to regularly travelthroughout the state, as well as in the region. Travel costs are reimbursed at the federal rate.
