The Department of Agricultural Economics at Mississippi State University (MSU) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research associate. This position is funded through a Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research grant to support the research objectives of a new multi-organization collaboration, the Open Market Consortium (OMC). The OMC is comprised of a group of institutions, farmers, and NGOs focused on the research, development, and pilot-scale launch of an open-source framework that uses blockchain technology to connect small and mid-sized farmers to institutional buyers. The OMC is focused primarily on supporting local and regional food systems markets and connecting specialty crop farmers and institutional buyers.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty in the Department of Agricultural Economics, especially those working in specialty crop marketing, agribusiness, and risk management, to fulfill MSU's research objectives for the OMC. The successful candidate will conduct applied economic research on blockchain applications in the supply chain for specialty crops, including contract design, price analysis, and consumer demand for blockchain-based traceability. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to lead and co-author multiple publications in top agricultural/applied economics journals and interdisciplinary journals. The successful candidate will also be expected to attend project meetings and interact with different stakeholder groups in the U.S. specialty crop industry. This position includes opportunities to work with graduate students.
A Ph.D. in Applied/Agricultural Economics, Economics, or related field completed by May, 2021
Background in contracting in agriculture, price analysis, consumer demand, or closely related fields.
Knowledge of the U.S. specialty crop industry.
Experience with survey and experimental design.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills.
Strong organizational skills, interpersonal skills, verbal and written communication skills, and ability to tailor the content of presentations to different audiences.
ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS):
Experience coding in Stata, R, Ngene, and Nlogit.
Knowledge of local and regional food systems.
Evidence of working collaboratively with academic and non-academic research partners.
