The Food Safety and Quality Manager will implement the Birchwood food safety and quality purpose and strategy through daily direction setting and guidance. The Manager will lead and direct the plant food safety and quality team’s routine including hiring, onboarding, and team member development.
Ensure a completely-staffed food safety and quality department by working with HR to ensure that vacancies are filled through interviews and qualified hires.
On-board new Food Safety and Quality staff in collaboration with Food Safety and Quality Operations Director.
Oversee the daily workflow of the department, and in alignment with other functions.
Partner with department leaders to handle food safety and quality decisions and actions.
Oversee the operation and function of the Food Safety and Quality Supervisors and Technicians.
Maintain and enforce programs, procedures, policies and manuals.
Ensure the safety and quality of incoming raw materials and outgoing finished products.
Meet personnel objectives by planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; providing awareness education, enforcing policies and procedures.
Meet operational objectives by providing analysis and insight to strategic planning; creating action plans; implementing quality and food safety standards, identifying and resolving problems; analyzing the results of audits and processing data to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify the path to continuous improvement process.
Design and develop SOP’s using the principles of HACCP to assure uniformity of purpose.
Validate quality processes by reviewing and fine tuning product specifications and quality attributes; measuring production; documenting evidence; determining operational and performance qualification; reviewing and critiquing quality assurance procedures.
Collaborate with Operations leaders and teams to implement strategic initiatives that enable Birchwood Foods to deliver in an ongoing manner on all food safety and quality expectations.
Implement and lead continuous improvement of all food safety and quality programs and systems to include, but not limited to, HACCP, BRC-related programs, the USDA Process Verified Program, and customer and 3rd party audit-driven requirements and policies.
Facilitate resolution of food safety and quality issues to ensure customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance through root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive actions.
Drive a positive food safety and quality culture at Birchwood Foods by championing behavior, education, and training, along with a continuous improvement culture and mindset.
Develop and implement environmental monitoring program.
Proven success in foreign material and pathogen control.
Implement and lead microbiological investigations.
Cross functional leadership and collaboration skills.
Quality Management Systems, including document control and KPI.
Statistical Process Control.
Education and Experience:
B.S./B.A degree in Microbiology, Food Science, Animal Science, Biological Sciences, or other related discipline.
Demonstrated expertise of Food Safety, Quality Assurance, and Sanitation practices.
Demonstrated leadership of food safety and quality at minimum manager level with direct reports.
HACCP certification and GFSI experience required; auditing certification preferred.
Complete knowledge and experience developing and managing HACCP, GMP, SSOP, and/or other BRC and customer-driven quality and food safety requirements and programs.
Comprehensive knowledge of USDA-FSIS regulations and requirements for meat processing.
Ten or more years of experience in food safety and quality management and food manufacturing.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
Sit for prolonged periods at a desk working on a computer (50% or more sitting).
Use hands and fingers to handle, or touch objects and/or controls, as well as use repetitive motion of fingers, hands and arms to operate computer and other equipment.
Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
Interact continuously with other staff members and job candidates, must have audible speech and good hearing and regularly meet multiple demands from several people.
